Skul: The Hero Slayer

Skul: The Hero Slayer is a 2D side-scrolling action platformer with roguelike elements. The player controls a living skeleton named Skul, who serves as a soldier in the Demon King's army. As Skul, the player must traverse randomly-generated levels to save the denizens of the Demon King's castle who were captured by the heroes.[4] Skul can slash enemies with his sword, dodge attacks, and throw his skull to damage enemies or teleport to where it landed.[5] The player can remove Skul's head and replace it with a skull that he finds, giving him new abilities in combat. Skul can equip up to two heads at a time, and can switch between both during combat.[6]

There are lots of cute skull and enemy designs with very smooth animations, and the sheer variety on display is pretty impressive. Every skull looks and feels very unique, and the rarer ones tend to have extremely visually impressive special attacks. This applies to enemies as well. So many of the character designs just ooze charm; like the maids in the Imperial castle that attack by throwing plates and silverware at you. Or the overconfident rookie adventurer mid-level boss that has attacks based around flexing and practicing heroic poses.

Skul: The Hero Slayer for PC on Steam takes players on an adventure to rescue the Demon King from a human Imperial army, all while playing as titular skeleton hero Skul. The side-scroller indie game was developed by SouthPAW Games and published by Neowiz, and offers gamers a strong playstyle experience with simple, intuitive combat and a heart-wrenching narrative told through charming pixel graphics.

Another aspect of Skul: The Hero Slayer that makes it such an excellent indie title is its narrative. Players learn that the enemies they'll be facing are human soldiers, led by a character called the First Hero. These soldiers have taken the Demon King to prove their own heroic abilities, leaving the kingdom in ruins. Players unravel how Skul came to exist in the Demon King's realm, and with the help of the Witch guiding him, are left to discover what makes a true hero, and not just one in title alone. The game's story challenges the player's ideas of what a hero looks like and what actions merit such a title while exploring the tragic backstory of its tiny skeleton protagonist.

What happens after the "good guys" win? Once the heroes are triumphant, the demon kings have been vanquished, and the land is restored, what then? Maybe some folks don't want the demon kings to be vanquished. Maybe there are still some grunts left in the kings' evil skeleton armies that would rather see them take their thrones once more. Such is the case in Skul: The Hero Slayer, which casts you as the lone skeleton survivor of a supposedly heroic demon purge. Adventurers, in conjunction with the Imperial Army, have laid waste to your king's castle and taken him hostage. You, the titular Skul, must sally forth to save him.

Skul is a bit like Hades but viewed side-on. It's an action-based Rogue-lite where you get one life to see how far you can get. You're not escaping a mythical underworld, but you are on a team traditionally viewed as the baddies, the demons, and you're fighting the heroes. Specifically, you're a skeleton, but more on that later because it's important. As you fight, you collect power-ups and abilities, and, at intervals, there's a shop where you can spend currency to either heal or buy further power-ups and abilities. See what I mean? Quite Hades-like.

Skul flips things: you're the skeleton rather than the hero who blasts them into dry grit, and this flipping suggests that skeletons are alright. They get up in the morning and put their skulls on just like everybody else. They store vital things in their chest compartment, just like we do. And they rush into battle and whack people with...a bone, which is a bit odd. It would be like us, rushing into battle and whacking people with...a bone...?

Skul flips the script for the classic hero versus an army of villains story. Instead of playing the lone human taking on a castle full of evil monsters, you play as a lonely skeleton after humans eradicated the rest of your undead kind. You take revenge on behalf of your slain brethren by picking up their severed heads and replacing your own with them, giving you access to fantastic new powers. 041b061a72
